The Mururani Gardening and Poultry Project
This project for which fund are yet to be sources aims to address the needs of the Hostel of the Mururani Combined School. In 2001 the communities on whose area the school is located started looking for funds to build an hostel to accommodate some of the students; in fact it is important to underline that most of the learners are orphans or vulnerable children coming from very difficult family and that the level of schools drop out in the area is very high due also to long distances the students have to travel to go to the school. This has given the idea of having a hostel which could also have been used as a shelter for the orphans who did not have a real home where to go back. After the completion of the hostel the school board and management, realised that there were also other challenge to face in order to provide a safe and hygienic environments for the students hosted at the hostel and in general for all the students of the school. Currently there is an urgent need for a borehole because water costs are among the highest costs for the hostel (and the school); this prevents growing vegetables from the existing garden which is in a status of neglect. The proposed intervention aims to alleviate the hostel and the school from some of the running costs while providing healthy nutrition for the learners; at the same time the activities deriving from the project also aim to make the school more self sustainable.
The main activities of the project will be the following: -revitalizing the garden by building a bore hole - establishing a functional and efficient garden - starts a small “poultry farm” by which provide fresh eggs and chicken for the children consumption.
